An exquisite late Victorian lavalier necklace in the Renaissance Revival style. A scrolling foliate frame of engraved gold supports three drops of chain embellished by links of bezel set sapphires and baroque pearls. A fourth baroque pearl dangles at the center of the frame. The sapphires and pearls are all natural. The pendant is crafted from 14k and 18k yellow gold. The pendant is beautifully crafted, with delightful detail and graceful movement. Circa 1890.
The word "lavalier" refers to an ornamental pendant suspended on a neck chain. The first recorded use of the term dates to 1915–20, after the Duchesse de La Vallière (1644–1710), one of the mistresses of Louis XIV. Many portraits of this fascinating woman exist, though she does not seem to actually wear a lavalier necklace in any of them.
Details.....The pendant measures 0.96" wide by 2.09" long. The modern 18k gold chain is 18" long. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
